How to Identify and Overcome the Limiting Beliefs Keeping You Stuck
Have you ever wanted something, a bigger goal, a new chapter, a braver version of your life, and then talked yourself right out of it before you even began? That quiet voice that says you are not ready, not qualified, not the kind of person who gets that. That voice has a name. It is a limiting belief, and it may be the single biggest thing standing between you and the life you want.
The good news is that limiting beliefs are not facts, and they are not permanent. They can be seen, questioned, and changed. As a life coach trained in Core Energy Coaching™, helping people clear these old beliefs is my favorite work in the world. Let me show you how to spot yours and start to loosen their grip.
What are limiting beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are the untrue or outdated ideas you hold about yourself, other people, or the world that quietly keep you from taking action and reaching your goals.
A limiting belief is a thought you have accepted as true that holds you back. Things like I am not good enough, success is for other people, I always mess this up, or it is too late for me. Most of them were formed long ago, often in childhood, and you may not even realize you are carrying them.
Here is what makes them so tricky. They do not feel like beliefs. They feel like facts, like simply the way things are. But a belief is just a thought you have practiced so many times that it feels true. And anything you have practiced, you can begin to unpractice.
How do limiting beliefs hold you back?
Limiting beliefs shape the actions you take and avoid, so they quietly steer your decisions, shrink your goals, and keep you stuck in the same patterns.
I believe our thoughts, feelings, and the things we tell ourselves shape our experience moment to moment. Limiting beliefs work exactly this way. If deep down you believe you are not the kind of person who succeeds, you will avoid risks, hesitate, and hold back, and then life reflects that belief back to you.
It becomes a quiet loop. The belief drives the behavior, the behavior creates the result, and the result seems to confirm the belief. Breaking that loop starts with seeing the belief clearly, because you cannot change what you cannot see.
What are some common limiting beliefs?
Common ones include I am not good enough, I do not deserve success, it is too late for me, and who am I to want more, each of which keeps you playing small.
See if any of these sound familiar:
I am not good enough, smart enough, or experienced enough.
I do not deserve success, money, or happiness.
It is too late for me to change or start over.
If I try and fail, it will prove I was never capable.
Who am I to want more than I already have?
I have to work myself to the bone to be worthy of what I earn.
Most of us carry a few of these, often without noticing. Simply reading them and recognizing your own is a powerful first step. Awareness is where change begins.
How do you identify your own limiting beliefs?
Notice where you feel stuck or afraid, then look for the thought underneath. The belief is usually hiding in the reason you give yourself for not moving forward.
Your limiting beliefs tend to reveal themselves at the edges of your comfort zone. A few ways to find them:
Notice your excuses. The reasons you give for not going after something often point straight to the belief underneath.
Watch for the word cannot. I cannot do that is usually a belief in disguise, not a fact.
Pay attention to envy. When you feel a pang seeing someone else succeed, it often marks something you believe is not available to you.
Listen to your self-talk. The way you speak to yourself in private is full of clues about what you believe you deserve and are capable of.
How do you overcome limiting beliefs?
You overcome a limiting belief by questioning whether it is actually true, then consciously choosing a more empowering belief and acting from it until it becomes your new normal.
Once you have named a belief, here is how you begin to shift it:
Question it honestly. Ask, is this really true, or just familiar? Most limiting beliefs do not survive an honest look.
Look for counter-evidence. Find real examples from your life that contradict the belief. They are almost always there once you look.
Choose a new belief. Decide what you would rather believe, something true and empowering, and practice it on purpose.
Act as if. Take one small action from the new belief. Confidence and change come from doing, not from waiting to feel ready.
This takes repetition, and it is not always easy to do alone, because the beliefs that limit us most are often the ones we cannot see in ourselves. That is exactly where a coach comes in.
Can a life coach help you change limiting beliefs?
Yes. A coach helps you see the beliefs you are too close to notice, question them, and replace them with ones that move you forward, so change actually lasts.
This is the heart of what I do. Through Core Energy Coaching™, we uncover the inner thoughts and old beliefs quietly keeping you stuck, then replace them with the clarity and confidence that have been in you all along. You come to each session with a goal, we narrow it down, and we get to work clearing what stands in your way. The breakthroughs are yours, and watching them happen is the greatest joy of my work.
You do not have to keep living from beliefs you never chose. A different story is available to you, and stepping into it can change everything. If you are ready to clear what has been holding you back and finally move forward, I would love to help.
