Do You Feel Like a Fraud? How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

You worked hard for what you have. The success, the role, the praise, the growing business. And yet a quiet voice insists it was luck, timing, or that you have somehow fooled everyone, and that any day now they will find out you do not really belong. If that sounds familiar, you are experiencing something incredibly common, and it has a name: imposter syndrome.

Here is what I want you to know right away. Feeling like an imposter is not proof that you are one. In fact, it often shows up most in capable, driven people who are stretching toward something new. As a life coach trained in Core Energy Coaching™, helping people quiet that fraud voice and step into their worth is some of my most rewarding work. Let me walk you through it.

What is imposter syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is the persistent feeling that you are not as capable as others think, and that your success is due to luck rather than your own ability, despite real evidence of your competence.

Imposter syndrome was first identified by psychologists back in the 1970s, and it describes that nagging inability to believe your success is truly deserved. You discount your wins, credit them to luck or help from others, and quietly fear being exposed as not good enough.

It is remarkably widespread. Research suggests that up to seventy percent of people experience imposter feelings at some point in their lives. So if you feel this way, you are in very good company, often alongside the most accomplished people you know.

What are the signs of imposter syndrome?

Common signs include discounting your achievements, fearing you will be found out, crediting success to luck, perfectionism, and holding back from opportunities you are ready for.

Imposter syndrome shows up in patterns like these:

●      Brushing off compliments and achievements as no big deal or just luck.

●      A constant fear of being found out or exposed as a fraud.

●      Feeling you have to be perfect, and being hard on yourself when you are not.

●      Overworking to prove you deserve your place.

●      Holding back from opportunities you are genuinely ready for.

If you recognize yourself here, take a breath. These are patterns of thought, not facts about your ability. And patterns can change.

What causes imposter syndrome?

Imposter syndrome usually grows from old beliefs about worth and success, often formed early in life, combined with the natural discomfort of growth and being seen.

At its root, imposter syndrome is a belief problem, not a competence problem. Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the idea that our worth depends on achievement, that success should feel effortless, or that being seen is risky. Those beliefs run quietly in the background and color how we interpret everything.

Interestingly, imposter feelings often get louder, not quieter, as you succeed. Every new level of growth stretches you past your comfort zone, and that vulnerable, exposed feeling can trigger the fraud voice all over again. In other words, feeling like an imposter is often a sign you are growing, not failing.

Why is imposter syndrome so common at work and in business?

Work and business constantly push you into new, visible, high-stakes situations, which is exactly where imposter feelings thrive, especially for entrepreneurs who carry it all themselves.

Few places trigger imposter syndrome like your career. Every promotion, new client, bigger goal, or moment in the spotlight asks you to show up before you feel fully ready. The higher you climb, the more visible you become, and the louder the fraud voice can get.

For entrepreneurs and business owners, it can be even more intense. When the whole thing rests on you, there is no boss handing you validation and no title confirming you belong. You are constantly putting yourself out there, marketing your work, naming your price, positioning yourself as the expert, and every one of those moments can stir up self-doubt. Many of the capable, driven people I coach are quietly fighting this battle while looking completely successful on the outside.

If that is you, please hear this: the fact that you feel it does not mean you are not ready. It usually means you are growing.

How do you overcome imposter syndrome?

You overcome imposter syndrome by naming the fraud voice, owning your real accomplishments, questioning the beliefs underneath, and practicing a steadier, more accurate view of yourself.

Here is where real change begins:

●      Name it. Simply recognizing “this is imposter syndrome talking” takes away much of its power over you.

●      Own your wins. Keep track of your accomplishments and practice crediting your own effort and skill, not luck.

●      Question the belief. Ask whether the thought that you are a fraud is actually true, or just a familiar fear. It rarely holds up.

●      Talk about it. Imposter syndrome thrives in silence. Naming it to someone you trust shrinks it fast.

●      Act anyway. Confidence is built by taking action before you feel ready, not by waiting for the fear to disappear first.

How can the Energy Leadership Index help with imposter syndrome?

The Energy Leadership Index™ (ELI) assessment reveals the patterns and beliefs behind how you show up, making the hidden drivers of imposter syndrome visible so you can shift them.

One of the hardest parts of imposter syndrome is that the beliefs fueling it are often invisible to you. You cannot change what you cannot see. This is where the Energy Leadership Index™ assessment is so powerful. The ELI™ is a research-backed assessment that shows you how you currently perceive yourself and show up in your life and work, especially under stress.

When we debrief your results together, those hidden patterns come into the light. You begin to see exactly where the fraud voice takes over and what belief is driving it. From that awareness, you finally get a choice, and choice is where freedom begins. I offer the ELI™ on its own and as part of my coaching, and it is an incredible starting point for anyone ready to understand themselves more deeply.

Can a life coach help you beat imposter syndrome?

Yes. A coach helps you see and shift the beliefs behind imposter syndrome, build genuine confidence, and learn to internalize your success so you can show up as your full self.

This is at the very heart of what I do. Through Core Energy Coaching™, we uncover the old thoughts and beliefs quietly keeping you stuck, then replace them with the clarity and confidence that have been in you all along. I believe our thoughts, feelings, and the things we tell ourselves shape our experience moment to moment. When you change the story underneath the fraud voice, everything about how you show up changes too.

You do not have to keep achieving while secretly waiting to be found out. You get to feel as capable as you actually are, and to enjoy the success you have worked so hard for. If you are ready to quiet the imposter voice for good, I would love to help you get there.

I'm Bobbi-Jo, a life coach trained through iPEC (Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching), one of the most rigorous coach training programs in the world. My work focuses on personal growth and mindset — helping people who feel stuck, unfulfilled, or disconnected from their own lives rediscover their sense of direction and possibility. Before stepping into coaching, I spent nearly two decades as a cosmetologist, building deep trust with clients one conversation at a time. I then transitioned into real estate, where I've spent over 17 years guiding people through some of the most significant decisions of their lives. Both careers taught me the same truth: people don't just need expertise — they need someone who will truly listen, ask the right questions, and believe in their potential even when they can't. That's what I bring to coaching. If you're ready to stop going through the motions and start living with intention, I'd love to connect.
